Sermon Introduction
Pull back the curtain on today’s culture, and you’ll find we’re not that much different from ancient
Israel. True, our information, mobility, and technology are light years beyond anything the
Israelites could have imagined. Our worship is significantly different, with the trumpet and horn
replacing the shofar of old. Yet if Micah, this rather obscure minor prophet, were to visit us today,
we might be surprised to see how, after almost 3,000 years, things change, but they really stay
the same. For, truth be told, human hearts are still the same--and, to our great relief, so is God.
Injustice, indifference, and indulgence anger him as much as ever. Disobedience still breaks his
heart. His hatred of sin remains as fierce as his love is strong.
And we often omit our reading of the prophets at grave peril to our own souls and to the wellbeing of this world that matters so much to God. That’s why we must read and understand Micah.
To God, this is a huge deal. But, how should we respond to what he says? What should we do?
Should we just be paralyzed by the immensity of the injustice because it’s way more than we can
fix? Should we sit around doing nothing, feeling overwhelmed by guilt over our own complicity?
Micah sums up the response God is looking for in one of the greatest verses of the Old Testament.
It’s the only statement I will ask you to carry away this morning, because if you grasp this one
thing — if you grasp this one statement — you grasp the heart of the prophets.

We regret to announce the death of Barbara
Jean (Rittenhouse) Matthews on June 29.
She is survived by her husband Robert
Matthews and her sister Janet Duncan.
We regret to announce the death of
Raymond Ryckman on July 18. He is survived
by his wife Evelyn, daughter, Ruby, and sons
Albert and Joseph Victor. Ryckman was a
Loma Linda University professor emeritus.
He had served as the chair of Microbiology.
He also helped found the School of Tropical
and Preventive Medicine now the School of
Public Health. The viewing and reception
will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 25 at
Emmerson Bartlett; the burial is at Montecito,
Tuesday, July 26 at 11 a.m. The center floral
arrangement is given by his family in his
memory.
BellForza and Campana Auditions will be
held Sunday, August 28 and Monday, August

The Heritage Singers’ 45th Anniversary
Reunion Concert: This will be the group’s
last reunion concert with over 100 former
and current Heritage Singers on stage. It
will be held Saturday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at
the Citizens Business Bank Arena, 4000
East Ontario Center Parkway, Ontario, CA.

Swim n Cinema: Join Loma Linda Academy
for family friendly movies on the pool deck
at Drayson Center. Shows start at 8:15 p.m.

Family Fun Nights: Join in the summer
fun for the whole family every Wednesday
in July from 6 to 8 p.m. Activities will include
water slides, bouncy balls, corn dogs,
shaved ice, and the biggest slip and slide
you ever fell down on! Bring your swimsuit,
$3 admission, and an appetite for summer
fun. The event will be at Loma Linda
Elementary School (10656 Anderson St.,
LL). Children 12 years and younger must
be accompanied by a parent or guardian
at all times.
Guy Penrod gospel concert: Everyone
is invited to a ticketed concert by gospel
singer Guy Penrod at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday
night August 20, at Loma Linda University

Quilters will not meet in the month of July.
Please remember to support the Quilters
Ministry through the summer by bringing
cloth, thread, yarn, or backing to the church
office. The quilts are donated to the SACHS
clinic and to LLUMC for babies in need.
WE BUILD: You are invited to join the
“WE BUILD” program – a daring faith and
fundraising campaign for our new ministry
building. LLUC membership can sign up for
re-occurring giving via the church website:

wanted to teach our children from infant to

School of Medicine Student Research
Project: If you would be willing to complete
a brief survey for a medical student on a
nickel allergy research project, stop by his
table in the breezeway. He will be outside the
Fellowship Hall each Sabbath through July.
The Lopers Club’s clinic begins celebrating
its 40th anniversary on Sunday, August 14.
