This is a very popular happy hour type outing. I suggest getting there as early as possible because parking spaces are a premium. Plan on spending about $25 for a bottle of wine to share and compare varietals. There is a sandwich shop next door and a pizza place across the parking lot. We have the outdoor patio reserved. Call or email if you plan to attend for an approximate head count. Saturday was the class session of the weekend for people like myself who were new to autocross. The day started early at 8am for registration and tech followed by an hour of classroom instruction from 9am to 10am. After the class session we were ready to get in our cars and prac- David Gotaas Competition Chair tice on three different courses that had been set up: a slalom, a figure eight, and a small course that had a sweeping right turn followed by a short straightaway and a 90-degree turn. It did not take long to realize just how difficult this sport can be to figure out how your car handles under speed and cornering, definitely an eye-opener. I have to say Cory Davis of the SCCA and his crew of volunteers were very organized and put on a great day of driving instruction for new people who want to get involved in the sport. I saw some See Opening/Next Page 6 | Sierra Nevada | Porsche Club of America | May 2014 Opening weekend to local race season From Previous Page familiar faces Saturday. Craig Kugler was there helping coach some drivers. I also saw a big variety of cars from a VW bug to a new Corvette Stingray. Porsche was represented well with some Boxsters and Caymans. Sadly, my day and weekend ended early with an overheating engine and other issues. Back to the shop it goes AGAIN, but I did learn something - my car’s auto trans is not so good for autocross. A manual trans would be much better. Overall a fun day. If PCA members want to give autocross a try (or have in the past), here are some dates for future SCCA events out at Stead Airfield: April 26-27 May 24-25 June 21-22 July 5-6 May 2014 | Porsche Club of America | Sierra Nevada | 7 New Member Breakfast Approximately 40 members turned out at the Gold-N-Silver Restaurant to welcome new members to SNR. Porsches of all kinds filled the parking lot. The club and always friendly longtime member, past president and organizer Merlin Simmons hosted new members to a big Gold-N-Silver breakfast buffet. Our enthusiastic President Steve Kent Newsletter Editor Karen Vibe personally welcomed new members and old members. Everyone socialized, discussed upcoming events and the spring weather. After breakfast each person present stood up at the prompting of Merlin, introduced them- selves and talked about how they got the Porsche bug, the Porsches they owned and their history with SNR. This reflected the club’s friendly diverse membership with interest ranging from gear heads to racers, restorers and members attracted to Porsche’s engineering, design and styling. It really is the people! 8 | Sierra Nevada | Porsche Club of America | May 2014 May 2014 | Porsche Club of America | Sierra Nevada | 9 SNR technical session By Jim Hemig Bill Pearce Porsche of Reno hosted a Boxster and Cayman tech session April 5th. Porsche of Reno’s lead service technician, Jess Lattin, provided insight on the inner workings of the two mid-engine sports cars. Jess had three Boxsters in various states of disassembly to allow viewing of everything inside the cars including the engine, the radiators, brakes and exhaust. Along with the three Boxsters, two Caymans were on lifts too. One of the Caymans was a brandnew 2014 Cayman S. Looking at these cars from all angles was a rare experience for the more than 30 SNR members in attendance. Jess was able to point out the similarities and differences between the newer and older Boxsters and Caymans. Jess also highlighted some of the more troublesome maintenance areas including the intermediate shaft bearings, rear main seals and coolant reservoir leaks. It was obvious Jess spent hours removing access panels prior to the SNR members’ arrival. Also awaiting the club members was coffee and bagels. Jess provided a high-class experience for the participants. 10 | Sierra Nevada | Porsche Club of America | May 2014 May 2014 | Porsche Club of America | Sierra Nevada | 11 Your Next Porsche? 2006 Porsche Cayman S One Owner, Clean CarFax, Low Miles #7559 2006 Porsche 997/911 S 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Trailer Package, CD Changer, Moonroof, 6 speed, Only 36K Miles, Slate Grey Full Leather, Adaptive Sport Seats, Roof Rails #7611 Bose, Heated Seats #7673C SportHaus is your #1 source of pre-owned Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and other exotic motorcars in Nevada.
