Poland, the Republic of
Poland, a state in the
Central Europe, on the
Baltic Sea. Poland is
situated between 49º00’N
(Opołonek Mount in the
Bieszczady Mountains) and
54º50’N (Cape Rozewie).
And between 14º08’E (the Odra River near Cedyni)
and 24º09’E (the Bug River near Strzyżów).
The country’s length from the north to the south is
649 km, and width from the east to the west is 689
km. Poland’s total surface area is 322,500 sq km.
312,600 sq km of land, 1,200 sq km of inland
waters (Szczecińska and Wiślana Bays), and 8,700
sq km of territorial waters. In terms of surface area,
Poland occupies the 63rd place in the world and the
9th place in Europe.
The total length of Poland’s borders is 3582 km,
including borders (km): sea border – 528, with the
Russian Federation – 210, with the Republic of
Lithuania – 103, with the Republic of Belarus – 416,
with Ukraine – 529, with the Republic of Slovakia –
541 km, with the Czech Republic – 790 and 467 km
with Germany.
Since 1999 territory of Poland is divided to 16
voivodeships (regions), 373 poviats and 2 489
communes.

The area of the Silesian Voivodeship covers over 12 294 km2,
which constitutes nearly 3,9 percent of Poland and gives to the
voivodeship the 14th position among the other ones. There are a
lot of cities in the Silesia Voivodeship – 68 (including 22 large
cities with metropolitan functions). Rural areas contain hardly
2,6 percent of total rural places in the country. The number of
inhabitants – almost 4,9 mln – comprises 12,5 percent of the
whole population of Poland. It is the most densely populated
voivodeship in Poland - 1 square km inhabited by 398 people
(the country's average - 123).
The central part of the region with the cities: Katowice,
Sosnowiec, Gliwice and Zabrze creates one of the most
urbanized and industrialized area in Europe. The northern
(Częstochowa) and southern (Bielsko-Biała) parts are mostly
green areas.
Silesian Voivodeship consist 36 poviats (17 land poviats, 19 city
poviats) and 166 communes.

which is element of chairing of national security, which is related
to prevention of crisis situations, preparadness of taking control
over them at the way of planned actions, responding at the case
of crisis situations apperance and rebuilding/recovery of
infrastructure and restoring of their previous character.
