Rather than eliminating something for Lent, God calls us to work on our lives. Please consider committing to memory a few of the following wise phrases that “hit” your life circumstances. Repeat them now and then. Copy one or two to note cards. Make more than one. Apply them to your life each day. And - pass them on, share them. 1] Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble; it is a "steering wheel" that directs us in the right path throughout life. 2] Do you know why a car's windshield is so large & the rear view mirror is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, be aware of the past, but look ahead and move on. 3] Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end! 4] When you believe GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems, God has faith in YOUR abilities. 5] A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eyesight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision." 6] When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them; When you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you. Pray always. Give God adoration and thanks. 7] WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES; it takes away today’s PEACE. Simple wax pillar candles shine on the meal we offer to God’s glory and praise. Lent calls us to continue the feast, but perhaps in changed ways. Arthur Lichtenberger, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1958 to 1964, is the author of Feast and Fasting for Lent. Fast from self-pity Fast from criticism Fast from ill temper Fast from resentment Fast from pride Fast from selfishness Fast from fear and feast on joy; and feast on praise; and feast on peace; and feast on love. and feast on humility; and feast on service; and feast on faith. Read, pray, fast and feast. Plan to take part in the faith journey and worship of Holy Week. God’s not finished with us yet! Five Wednesdays in Lent you are invited to engage what it means to be …… Embracing an Adult Faith March 23, 30, April 6, 13, 20 Offered at 10am and 7pm in the Conference Room The presentation is the same for morning and evening sessions. Author and Biblical scholar Marcus Borg will lead us (via DVD) to revisit Christianity’s most fundamental questions: Who is God? What does salvation mean? What place does Jesus hold in contemporary Christian faith? We will view a dialogue with a small, diverse group of adults as they honestly — and sometimes painfully — confront the big questions and work together toward authentic answers. Each session includes a 10-minute teaching presentation by Marcus Borg followed by interaction within our group, using Dr. Borg’s suggested questions. Our conversations will address fundamental questions that adults struggle with as our faith matures. Please RSVP Mother Cynthia to receive Dr. Borg’s questions to consider before attending each session that will aid in our discussions. CORe: Spiritually Growing Within Living the faith Out Volume 51, Issue 3&4 Page 5 Maundy Thursday, April 21 6pm The Agape Meal & 7 pm Worship Scholars differ on whether the Last Supper was a Passover Meal or not. But one thing for sure, it must have been a meal of love and community. The early Christians had two meals on Sunday: the Eucharist and a full feast of community, an agape meal. Later in history the Moravians dubbed this a “love feast.” This year as we prepare to remember the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, we too are going to have an Agape Meal. We will gather by candlelight in Stewart Hall to enjoy a simple Mediterranean meal of olives, dates, bread, cheese, wine (and sparkling water) before we journey quietly into the church for the service to begin. The stripping of the church will follow the Foot Washing and Holy Eucharist. As the nave grows quiet, you are urged to stay awhile and pray. The all night vigil begins immediately. Childcare provided. Night Watch “in the Garden with Christ” – A Prayer Vigil 9:00 pm Maundy Thursday to 11 am on Good Friday After the Last Supper, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray to his heavenly Father as he waited to be arrested, his journey to the cross to soon follow. Please sign up to prayerfully keep vigil with the living Christ. The Night Watch begins at the end of Maundy Thursday worship, April 21st. Come alone or sign up with a friend or family member. Sign up for one of the 14 one-hour slots or sign up for more. To rise and pray in the night is a moving experience, an act of faith to stay awake with the Christ before the journey to the cross. In a strife-torn world, there is much to be prayed for in vigil with the Christ. A signup sheet is on the cork board in Stewart Hall. Please see Mother Cynthia with any questions. The Way of the Cross † Good Friday, April 22nd 7:00 pm The devotion known as the Way of the Cross is an adaptation to local usage of a custom widely observed by pilgrims to Jerusalem for hundreds of years: the offering of prayer at a series of places in that city traditionally associated with our Lord’s passion and death. As the sun sets and dark descends, The Way of the Cross in our parish will be a quiet contemplative “come as you are” experience of listening, praying, and simple Taize chants. The chants are only one line long and are easy to repeat. Participants can volunteer to come forward to hold the wooden cross during one of the “stations” and feel the weight of the burden, alone or shared with a family member or friend. Like the young people visiting Taize, if so moved, participants are welcome to sit on the floor, at the altar rail, or against the wall – the special spot of their own choosing to enter the Way of the Cross. On this Good Friday night, when we recall the great sacrifice that occurred two millennia ago, we do not so much seek to offer perfect prayers as we desire to be willing to fully enter into the Passion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with our hearts, minds, souls, and voices. By our Baptism, Jesus’ journey to the Cross is the same journey we live today as we seek to do the will of God with the fabric of our entire life. Being Christians calls us to journey on our own Way of the Cross, where great sacrifice may be necessary to be daily ministers of justice, mercy, and peace. During this bleak period, Vestry has used this time to set the course for CORe mission and ministry imperatives which resulted from the study “Becoming a Blessed Church” Forming a Church of Spiritual Purpose, Presence , and Power. 1. Worship (Judy Roeser, Michele Peters, Gerry Davis) -Program areas include: Liturgy Planning, Music Support & Development, Usher/Greeters, Acolytes, Altar Guild, Communication, and New Member Incorporation. 2. Spiritual Growth (Barbara Bolden, Bob Senseney, Dorothy Dowlan) -Program areas include: Adult & Youth Education Formation, Pastoral Care Development, Special Events (retreats, quiet days), Prayer Groups and Communication. 3. Outreach (Charlie Dean, Bill Davies, John Kayi). -Program areas include: Local Community Assessment “niche unmet”, Project Development, New Member Attraction, and Communication. The next step is to identify parish members that would have an interest in developing program activities in these areas. Some of you may have already been approached. If not, we encourage you to contact one of the vestry persons in your area of interest. CORe cannot be alive to God’s Presence without the member participation so that people can encounter and experience Christ in every facet of their lives. God is constantly calling us to serve. True ministry and mission are a response to Christ, who is embodied in us and who seeks to reach out to others through us. Are you listening and will you answer His call? Our group will be blessed with the teaching ministry of Bishop Gibbs. Members of all ages are invited to attend, observe and learn. Our group has been blessed with visits each Sunday from a variety of members of our congregation and we’ve had some fun, idea-sharing sessions including a vist from our diocese Youth & Young Adult minister Eric Travis & his wife. We look forward to bringing our ideas to life – the Holy Spirit has blessed us with the energy! The season of Lent is a prayerful time and as such we suspend saying the word “Alleluia” during Lent. The Sunday School children will “Bury the Alleluia” at Lent’s start then resurrect it Easter Sunday in a celebration of joy for our Lord’s resurrection. The pretzel has been used during Lent for over 1500 years as it resembles arms crossed in prayer. Since basically only flour & water are used, pretzels can remind us of Lenten fasting as well as prayer. The Pretzel Prayer Heavenly Father we ask you to bless these little breads. Each time we eat them, may we be reminded of the special season of prayer & fasting that we are keeping. May they remind us of those in need. Keep your loving arms around us, O Father, to protect us always, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. As we progress to Palm Sunday we prepare our hearts for the arrival of Jesus. We celebrate Jesus’ resurrection by resurrecting the “Alleluia!” in a joyous procession & continue our celebration into fun-filled activities following the Easter service. Alleluia! Christ is risen!
