The Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement elected East Baton Rouge Sheriff
Sid Gautreaux this month to serve as Chair of the Board. Sheriff Gautreaux stepped
in for Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley who has served for the past six years.
Nominated by the board, Sheriff Gautreaux ran unopposed and was unanimously
elected. As Chair, Sheriff Gautreaux will be the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission and oversee all board meetings. The board consists of 54 members
representing criminal justice agencies throughout Louisiana.
DEPUTIES OF THE MONTH
Deputy Chad Ruiz, Training, has been named the Administrative and
Support Services of the Month. Deputy Ruiz was hired by the EBRSO in July of
1991. Deputy Ruiz is a certified instructor in First Aid/CPR, Freeze +P, Radar, and is
a POST Corrections instructor. He is also an instructor in the CARTA Academy,
teaching several classes. Deputy Ruiz‟s CDL certification makes it possible to have
a bus assigned to the academy and allows him to transport the classes to various
sites for PT training when necessary. He represents the Office in a positive and professional manner, while taking great pride in his work.
Deputy Jackson Bridel, Kleinpeter Substation, has been named the Uniform Patrol
Deputy of the Month. Deputy Bridel was hired by the Sheriff‟s Office in August of
2011. Deputy Bridel is a very proactive deputy. He makes numerous self-initiated
arrests to include DWI and warrants due to his proactive nature. On March 8, 2014,
during a traffic stop, the driver fled. Deputy Bridel maintained his composure and began to follow the fleeing vehicle. After crashing at an intersection, the driver fled on
foot. Deputy Bridel captured the fleeing suspect and an investigation began. The
suspect was arrested for being in possession of a stolen handgun, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, suboxone, and paraphernalia. All of the narcotics were bagged for individual sale.
Deputy Sylvester Lee has been named the Corrections Deputy of the Month. Deputy Lee was hired by the Sheriff‟s Office in September of 2011. His outstanding attendance record and his attention to detail have allowed him to prove his worth at
the Parish Prison. Deputy Lee has recovered numerous amounts of inmate contraband to include shanks, tobacco, tattoo guns, etc. At any moment, Deputy Lee‟s
can be called on to work in any area of the prison without complaint and effectively
handle the situations that arise.
William Thomas, of Homicide, has been named the Detective of the Month. Deputy
Thomas has been with the Sheriff‟s Office since July of 2009. He became a member
of the Homicide Division in July of 2013. In February of 2014 Deputy Thomas heard,
what he interpreted to be a threat to a material witness while listening to an inmate
call. Thomas notified the BRPD to protect the witness and began an investigation to
locate the suspects mentioned on the call. The suspects were located and detained
and the witness testified at the trial as planned.
Captain Willie Douglas has been name the Civil Deputy of the Month. Captain Douglas was hired by the EBRSO in December of 1988. Through hard work and determination, he has increased the collection of business and valorem taxes. He has also
accepted additional responsibilities willingly and executed them with the same vigor
as his primary job. Lastly, Captain Douglas always assists any EBRSO Division
when called upon to do so and is always looking for opportunities to enhance the image of the Sheriff‟s Office when the situation presents itself.

The Sheriff, Coroner, Louisiana State Police, Baton Rouge Chief of Police, and District
Attorney jointly issued an alert this month to warn parents, young adults, and teenagers of the danger our community is currently facing from the sale and consumption of
products being sold as “synthetic marijuana”. Also this month Community Policing Unit
surprised the children at Our Lady of the Lake to deliver donated gifts. Sheriff Sid
Gautreaux also joined Chef Celeste in the kitchen and Scott Rogers on the set of the
Around the Town Show. The Sheriff and DA hosted an appreciation lunch for the LSP
Crime Lab.
