Unity in Diversity
We the community of Our Lady of Peace Parish are a welcoming Catholic family, richly
diverse in culture and language, who have chosen to come together because of our common
faith in Jesus Christ. Grounded in Baptism, in Word, and Eucharist, we are committed to give
ourselves in service to share the Gospel message of hope and new life, and to support one another in living our faith in the world.
Sunday Reflection
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We have reached the 4th Sunday of Lent – Laetere Sunday “Joyful Sunday” where we wear
rose once again as we are half way done with this season and the invitation to pray, fast and
give alms. If you haven’t done any, begin now. It is not too late. The Triduum is still 3 weeks
away. For the next 3 bulletins, I will reflect a bit on this celebration known as the Triduum
which is the climax of the season of Lent. The Triduum is what you can say is the “mother”
of all masses. In fact, it is one mass celebrated over three days which highlights the final days of Jesus’ life
from the Last Supper to his Passion and Death to his Resurrection. And so we begin with Thursday with the
celebration known as “the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.”: Thursday, traditionally, is a day honoring the priests
as the Chrism mass usually takes place that morning at the Cathedral Church. Here, the holy oils which the
priests will use are blessed and the priests renew the promises they took on the day of their ordination. The
mass of the Lord’s Supper continues that theme as we relive the Last Supper and the Institution of the Eucharist. During this mass, a few things to note: 1) the tabernacle is emptied –the focus is on the celebration to take
place as there was no Eucharist until Jesus and the disciples gathered for the Paschal Feast; 2) no other mass
(other than chrism) may be celebrated on this day – noting importance of this celebration for the entire community; 3) the bells of the church are rung with great fervor and joy during the singing of the Gloria, only to be
silenced at its conclusion as we note a more somber tone. We gather with Jesus to celebrate a final meal with
him; and 4) note the moon that night.
If this celebration relives the Last Supper, we would expect the Gospel to be the words of institution as Jesus
said, “take and eat” and “take and drink.” However, they are not. Rather the Gospel is taken from John (which
is the only Gospel that does not have the institution narrative) and instead depicts the washing of the feet of the
12 disciples. In is in this act of humble service that the role of the priest was first defined. He is to be in service
of those around him. This act is truly present in the diaconate as this is a “ministry of service” and all priests
are ordained deacons first and reminded of their call to serve. The washing of the disciples feet is then reenacted for the Church to see as disciples are first served and then are called to serve others. For the nonordained Christian faithful, this moves us all ultimately to what it means to be humble like Christ and how we
are meant to help one another in this world. It draws us into our own vocation or helps us discover it.
The Mass continues with the Eucharist prayer, where we hear those words of consecration and the miracle of
the Eucharist takes place before our eyes. The bread is broken and the wine is poured as they have become the
Body and Blood of Christ. We call to mind that our Lord is about to enter into his Passion and Death to save us
all. And he gives himself to us in this Sacrament. Following the prayer after communion, there is no dismissal.
This has just been the first part of a three part “drama” unfolding before our eyes. Rather, we take the left over
hosts (remember the tabernacle is empty) and we process with Christ to a place of repose. From the Last Supper, Jesus went with his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Now, we go with Jesus to this “Garden
of Gethsemane” and we are invited to pray before and with our Lord. And Jesus asks us,“Could you not keep
watch for one hour?” Mark 13:37. You are invited to stay with our Lord that night in prayer until midnight.
And as you walk home or to your cars and look at the moon, call to mind that is the same full moon our Lord
prayed under in the Garden of Gethsemane as he asked “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from
me; still, not my will but yours be done.” Luke 22:42. We have entered into his Passion.
Our Lady of Peace… pray for us.
Thank you for supporting our parish with your weekly offering.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas e Cristo,

Scripture is scary-- okay maybe not but now that we have your attention, come join us in getting to
know scripture a little bit more. We're introducing W.O.W. (Word of the Week) from our Youth
Ministry program where we'll explore scripture in ways that will break down the barriers we currently
have in exploring God's word. Each week we'll dive into scripture and have a chance to see how it
applies to our lives today. Get ready to get your mind blown by what God has to say to YOU through
his Word.
