JOAN OF ARC CHURCH March 9, 2014 – First Sunday of Lent Matthew 4:1-11 In today’s Gospel, Jesus was brought out of his everyday life and into a place where he was tempted off course. Three temptations… comfort, power, wealth. These three things can consume us and lead us astray – wanting wealth, to be no.1 and comfortable in various ways. What I liked best about this story is the fact that he fought back with scripture….It is written, It is written, It is written…again It is written. He always goes back to the word of God to find strength and insight to fight off evil, words that he learned at home, school and worship. Likewise, a big source of energy for us is the word of God. On Ash Wednesday the invitation is to believe the good news. That is where we find life and strength. Many years ago I was living at St. Mary’s and studying to be a brother when I felt that this wasn’t what I was supposed to do,(of course meeting Fran didn’t help) but I needed to discern what I needed to do next. My advisor said spend some time with scripture, just pray over the word, open it up and really listen to his message. Of course at first I was skeptical but after spending time sitting in chapel time with those pages open, more and more insight came to me. I spent the evening reading and praising my incredible friend and savior. Not only does his Word give great advice but it reassures us that we are not the only, first, or last person to go through this, and we are never alone in our struggles. A Lenten thing to do could be to read a bit of the gospel every day. Look up ‘sacred space’ on the web, pray from that. Pray your own favorite gospels. Read the gospel to the children. We look to the word of God to build us up as God’s children and community and we find strength in it to use in the service of God and others in love. Lead us Lord this Lent in the way, the truth and life of your son.
