Mary’s Rosary Circle

Bishop Serratellli has designated the month of August as a me to pray for those who are suffering religious persecu on. The
Bishop’s le er to the people of the Diocese of Paterson is printed here below.
My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,
On June 30, 2015, the feast of the Chris ans martyred under Nero in 64 A.D., our Holy Father, Pope Francis, remarked that there
are more persecuted Chris ans in the world today than there were in the first centuries. Each month 180 Chris ans are being
martyred. These sad sta s cs bear witness to the fact that Chris ans are among the most persecuted religious groups worldwide.
In more than 60 countries, over 200 million Chris ans are being denied their fundamental rights. In 41 of those countries, Islamic
extremists are barbarically beheading, crucifying and killing men, women, young people and children. Tragically, in those areas of
the world where Chris anity once began, the Chris an community is being wiped off the map. Islamic jihadists do not limit their
violence to Chris ans alone. They spare no religious group, even killing those of their own Muslim faith.
As Pope Francis recently remarked, "The drama c news ... about violence, kidnapping ...and harassment against Chris ans and
other groups does not stop. We want to assure those involved in these situa ons that we do not forget them, but we are close to
them and pray insistently that, very quickly, the intolerable brutality of which they are vic ms is put to an end" (Angelus, May 1,
2015).
The Pope has urged us to pray for an increased awareness of the "drama of persecuted Chris ans in our day," for religious freedom
as an "inalienable human right" and for the "end to this unacceptable crime." In response to our Holy Father's urgent request and
united with him in concern for all those suffering religious persecu on, I am designa ng this August as a diocesan-wide Month of
Prayer for Those Suffering Religious Persecu on.
I invite all pastors and religious superiors to promote this inten on. The Prayer for Those Suffering Religious Persecu on should be
prayed together at all Masses.
Invoking God's blessing on all the faithful, religious and clergy of our diocese, I remain,

Good and gracious Father, whose own Beloved Son suffered violence and death for the salva on of the world,
listen graciously to our cry for all who are being persecuted for their faith. In your great mercy, comfort them
with the Holy Spirit.
Give them strength in the face of hos lity and courage in the face of trial. Open the eyes of those who raise
their hands in violence to see others as their brothers and sisters, children of the one Father of all. By your
grace, turn their hearts from hatred to love.
Through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Queen of Peace, may jus ce and peace prevail so that all
may have the freedom to worship you, the one true God and him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ, who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

A visitor to our parish recently observed to me as I stood at the door of the church to greet people following Mass: “I have
never seen so many people leave Mass early.” I had to agree. I have o en wondered why people do, in fact, leave Mass so early. At
first I thought that it was because of our horrendous parking situa on. But that can’t be the reason. Even when the parking lot is
half-full people leave Mass before it is through – some mes even walking past the celebrant to get to the door. On various
occasions I have gingerly and with as much tact as possible asked, “Is it possible to wait un l the Mass is concluded before you
leave?” The answer, invariably, “God doesn’t care – he only cares that I am here.” The response is absolutely correct insofar as it
goes. But our presence at Mass is not only a ma er of showing respect for God – although, of course, our worship of Almighty God
is what is most important – it is also a ma er of showing respect for one another.
Of course, there will be mes when a person is pressed for me, or doesn’t feel well, or just wants to move on with the
day quickly and feels that they must leave Mass before it is concluded. I understand that and, frankly, during my various s nts as a
student or when on vaca on, I have occasionally bolted to the door before the conclusion of the final hymn. But I ask you to ask
yourself, is there something really so important that I must leave Mass early every week? If the answer is “yes” well then the
ma er is se led. If the answer is “some mes” – that would seem to provide for an occasional early exit, but if the answer is “no” –
then it might be an exercise in self-discipline to remain following Holy Communion to offer thanksgiving for the gi of the Body and
Blood of the Lord that we have received in the company of others also grateful for the gi of the Eucharist.
We don’t receive Holy Communion as individuals alone – we receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in common and are
built up into the Body of Christ through receiving the Eucharis c Lord – together. A moment spent in prayer following Holy
Communion is an encouragement to our brothers and sisters who need the witness of our faith in order to remain faithful of the
call to follow the Lord. In our fast paced society an extra moment or two in prayer can help to make us more focused on what is
really important in the week ahead. Addi onally, our culture really seems to need, at least in my opinion, more emphasis on
mutual respect and what my grandmother, and probably yours, called “good manners.” In the ever increasing coarsening of
language and culture in all forms of media it is healthy and humanizing to keep places like church sacred not only because they
pertain to the things of God but because they remind us that we are all made in God’s image and so we are each deserving of the
respect and the dignity that comes from that truth. I am always grateful to see anyone who comes to Mass – whether early or late
– or even on the fly following Mass – and I would be even happier if I didn’t see you as a blur running down the stairs. Do we
always need to be in such a hurry?
Bishop Serratelli wrote an ar cle for The Beacon last year which is an excellent medita on on church e que e – it might
be good food for thought as we remember that while reverence is essen ally held in the heart our outward expression and
manners says a great deal about what we feel inside and what we believe to be of central importance.

England’s Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for fi y-nine years. During her life me, she has seen eleven U.S. presidents come
and go. Queen Elizabeth got along especially well with President Reagan. Once, they even went horse-back riding together at
Windsor Castle. However, such familiarity did not push aside royal protocol.
In 1982, when the president and the queen were walking together, President Reagan wanted his wife, Nancy, to walk in
front of them. But, according to royal protocol, the president’s wife was expected to walk behind the queen and next to the
queen’s husband. Sensing the awkwardness of the situa on, the queen had them all walk together in one line.
Civil people s ll observe proper e que e when in the presence of the queen. When the queen enters a room, the guests
stand. In gree ng her, a man bows and a woman curtsies. When they first address the queen, they say, “Your Majesty,” therea er,
“Ma'am.” No one speaks unless first addressed by the queen.
We should not be surprised that there is a protocol in the presence of royalty. A er all, the queen embodies in her person
the Bri sh Commonwealth. She is the cons tu onal monarch of sixteen independent sovereign states. The respect shown her is
the respect shown to all the people under her scepter. It is a way of acknowledging that her power and authority are at the service
of the good of both her people and all.
The 15th century Council of Basel drew the comparison between the way we are expected to behave in the presence of

our civil rulers and the way we should behave in the presence of God. The Council stated, “A person who is about to make a
request to a secular prince takes pains to compose himself and his words by decent dress, becoming gesture, regulated speech and
close a en on of mind. How much more careful ought he to be in all these things when he is about to pray to almighty God in a
sacred place!” Coming into the presence of God requires a proper e que e on our part. Yet, we seem to be less and less aware of
this in our day.
Today, a very casual a tude pervades all our social interac ons. Proper church e que e, like all civil behavior, suffers
greatly in our day. The way that we dress for church is casual. Some mes more suited for the sports field or beach! Our observance
of silence is casual as well. Not infrequently people chew gum in church, keep their cell phones on and talk during the liturgy.
The way that we behave in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament has changed much in the last two genera ons.
Genuflec ng when coming before the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle is rarely done. At funerals and weddings, as some come
to receive Holy Communion, they stop and chat with others instead of approaching the Lord in prayerful recollec on. In some
places, reverence to the Eucharist is withheld when the mandated rituals of purifica on of the sacred vessels a er Communion are
laid aside for a more casual disposal of the fragments of the Eucharist and the remains of the Precious Blood.
To begin, when we come to church, we are not coming to just an ordinary building. We are entering a sacred place. Yes,
the church is, first of all, the People of God “made one as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one and … the temple of God
built with living stones, in which the Father is worshipped in spirit and in truth” (Order of the Dedica on of a Church, ch. II, 1).
Nonetheless, the church building is made holy not simply by the worshipping community, but by the very Presence of God.
“Nothing so becomes a church as silence and good order. Noise belongs to theatres…and market-places: but [in church]…
there should be s llness, and quiet and calm reflec on, and a haven of much repose” (St. John Chrysostom). We are not a ending
a performance. We are par cipa ng in liturgy, the very worship of God. In church, we are most visibly before God. Even our dress
should acknowledge this. As St. Cyprian once said, “The dress of the body should not discredit the good of the soul.”
Perhaps we have lost sight of the basic fact that God is Lord and we are his humble servants. He made us. He is the
Creator, not us. With all our advances in science, with our technological ability to begin human life and to end human life, to
manipulate and control life, we may be tempted to push God aside and place ourselves at the center of the universe.
This may explain something of our rather casual a tudes and behaviors when we come into his presence. While his
power and authority may seem to have been diminished in the view of some, it is not so in reality. He has placed all his goodness at
the service of our redemp on.
God, the Lord of all crea on, has stooped to rescue us from our sins. He has sent his only-bego en Son to be our Savior.
As Paul reminds us, “Though he was in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he
emp ed himself…coming in human likeness; …he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of
this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth…” (Phil 2:6-9).
When we come to church, we come to the Eucharist where this mystery of Christ’s dying and rising for us is made present.
When we enter church, we are before Christ present to us in the Blessed Sacrament. Therefore, our reverence is not one of
trembling or dread, cowering before a monarch whose power we fear. No! It is the hushed awe in the presence of a love too great
for words. A love that inspires and li s up. A love that draws us out of ourselves into the very life of God.
The more we realize what it means to come to church, the more easily will our dress, our ac ons, our speech and our
silence publicly witness to our faith in God who gathers us together so that “from the rising of the sun to its se ng, a pure sacrifice
may be offered to [his] name” (Roman Missal, Eucharis c Prayer III, third edi on).

One of the most vital ministries in our parish, or any parish, is that of catechist. In order for our faith forma on program to
work we are in need of catechists to help us in this vital work of handing on the faith to the young people of our parish. We are in
need of more catechists so that our faith forma on program con nues to be effec ve. Please think about serving as a catechist.

From me to me parishioners ask about dona ng sacred furnishing that might be memorialized as a tribute to departed
loved ones. I am always reluctant to memorialize any item for use in the church because they wear out and a future pastor will
have different ideas about what is appropriate for church. Thus, a memorial is really something that needs to endure for a very
significant period of me. A parish Na vity Set is such an item. For whatever reason, our Na vity is incomplete and in bad repair;
some of the figures have digits and limbs missing. Rough journey to Bethlehem I guess! Last year, memorials were accepted but we
did not cover all of the items and so the idea to acquire a new Na vity was abandoned. The one that will be purchased, someday, is
made in Italy and is carved in wood. The Na vity is beau ful and worthy of the mystery of the Incarna on. It was suggested that
people might have the opportunity to memorialize loved ones by banding together for a par cular piece. Of course, people are
welcome to take advantage of that opportunity as well. Those who wish to contribute toward the Na vity or a par cular piece may
do so for an offering of a $300.00 pledge that might be fulfilled over six months. The Memorial List is as follows:

If you are interested in memorializing these items, please call Mrs. Beverly Cuccinelli at the parish office. The quality of the
Na vity figures can be seen in examining the statuary in our church, for example, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Sacred Heart, and
the other statues in the shrine area. We will create a memorial plaque that will be placed in our Franciscan Shrine that will be kept
in the church year round. Thank you for your considera on of this opportunity to honor departed loved ones and praise the
mystery of the Incarna on, the Word made flesh.

Please support the Fr. English Center and support a

Community food bank dates have been set for this year.
It is a wonderful ministry and opportunity to work with

Food Pantry Shelves are Bare!
Our Food Pantry coordinators, Ed Kohler and
David Mallonee, need your help. It is summer
time and our food pantry shelves are getting
very empty. Thanks to your generosity in the
past, we have been able to distribute up to 40
to 50 bags of groceries each week. Our basic bag consists
of a box of cereal, a box of pasta and a jar/can of sauce, a
can or two of soup, two cans of vegetables - one green
(peas, green beans, etc.) and one starch (beans, corn,
potatoes, etc.), a can of tuna fish, a can of fruit or a jar of
peanut butter or jelly, and/or whatever extras we may have
that week.
Right now we are in desperate need of cereal, tomato sauce,
soup and canned vegetables. We could also use cans of
tuna or fruit and jars of peanut butter or jelly. Pasta is the
one thing of which we have plenty!
Please keep the food pantry in mind when you do your
grocery shopping and pick up an extra can or jar of
something.
