Seventeenth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Genesis 18:20-32
Abraham pleads with the Lord, who planned to
destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of the evil
and sin in those cities. Abraham asks him if he would
spare the city if fifty, forty, thirty, twenty or even only
ten innocent people were found there. God says that
he would spare the cities even for the sake of only
ten.
Second Reading: Colossians 2:12-14
Paul explains to the Colossians that through baptism,
they are raised to life with Christ because they
believed in the power of the God who raised him from
the dead. Even though they once lived in sin, their
sins have been pardoned through Jesus.
Gospel: Luke 11:1-13
Jesus' disciples asked him how they should pray. He
gave them some phrases similar to those now used
in the Lord's prayer. Jesus also reminds the disciples
how even men with sins are able to give good things
to their children, and explains how much more the
heavenly Father wants to give to us.
Pray with Scripture…

Cardinal’s Appeal Update 2013
As of July 10, 2013, 283 households have contributed $156,781.72 to the Cardinal’s Appeal.
Annunciation’s goal is $180,000. If you have not contributed to the Appeal, please consider
giving in the near future. So many institutions of the Archdiocese depend on our money for
survival. Many thanks to the 283 donors who have given to the Appeal. You can send your
donation directly to: Cardinal’s Appeal 2013, Archdiocese of Washington, P.O. Box 29260,
Washington, DC 20017-0260. Please indicate that you are a parishioner of Annunciation.
You can place your donation in an envelope, leave it in the offertory collection and it will be
delivered to the Archdiocese.
God Bless you for caring,
Msgr. V. James Lockman, Pastor
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
The Church of the Annunciation sent $3,427.92 in relief aid to Catholic Charities in Oklahoma City
to help those who were recently hit by the violent storms in that area. Catholic Charities of
Oklahoma City delivered more than $370,000 in immediate relief assistance to more than 3,400
families since the first storm hit on May 19th. Thanks to everyone for their prayers. We have seen
abundant blessings by God as well with the generosity of others helping those in need and
hundreds of volunteers.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Contact: Patrice Morace 202-362-3323 x13 morace@annunciationdc.org
Volunteers needed for the 2013-2014 Year
Do you have an interest in sharing our faith with adults or children? I am always looking for people. We use a
“team” model in all our education ministries so that the commitment is not every week and allows for not only
flexibility in your schedule but adds to the quality and substance of what you are delivering to our parish adults or
children. If you would like to explore options and information, email Patrice Morace at morace@annunciationdc.org
or call at 202.362.3323 ext 13.
Do you know anyone who wants to explore Our Catholic Faith? RCIA is the Church’s way of forming new disciples
of Jesus Christ. It’s the way the Catholic Church welcomes its newest members, but even more important than
membership in the Catholic Church is discipleship in Christ Jesus. Through a gradual, complete and comprehensive
training in the Christian way of life, the unbaptized come to know Jesus Christ through the Catholic Christian
community and they learn to live as Jesus— disciples. Then, as disciples, they continue the mission of Jesus Christ in
the world today.
Some people who participate in the RCIA are already disciples of Jesus Christ by virtue of their Baptism in a
Protestant denomination. Although the RCIA is designed primarily for the unbaptized, the process has been adapted
for those who are already baptized, including adults and children over seven years of age.
Participating in the RCIA is much more than going to classes on Catholicism. It’s undergoing a conversion to a new
way of life in Christ. Although doctrinal instruction is a part of the formation process, the formation of disciples is
more like an apprenticeship. The —apprentices— learn the Catholic Christian way of life from being in the midst of
the parish community. The entire community helps form the apprentice in the Christian way of life. If you know of
anyone who might be interested, please contact Patrice Morace at morace@annunciationdc.org or 202.362.3323 ext
13 for more information.
