Jubilee Year of Mercy
A Stewardship Parish, Sharing Our God -Given Gifts in Service 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time – January 24, 2016 Take time this week to reflect on today’s readings: First Reading — Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10; Psalm — Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 15; Second Reading — 1 Corinthians 12:12-30; Gospel — Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Mass Schedule Monday - Friday: 8:15 AM. Vigil Mass for Sunday: Saturday - 5:00 PM. Sunday: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday: 4:00 - 4:30 PM. Rosary Monday - Friday: 7:45 AM. Jubilee Year of Mercy When he announced this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, Pope Francis highlighted today’s Gospel episode, in which Jesus proclaims in his hometown synagogue his Spirit-anointed mission to fulfill the promises of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus’ mission then, says Pope Francis, is our mission now as Jesus’ disciples this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy: to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord, a year of God’s mercy. Pope Francis challenges us to translate Jesus’ mission to contemporary needs: to console by word and deed those materially or spiritually poor, to liberate those bound by modern society’s new forms of slavery, to open the eyes of those blinded by their own self-interest, and to restore human dignity to all those from whom it has been stolen. To act with mercy in a spirit of joy! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. To prepare for 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time: First Reading — Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19; Psalm — Psalm 71:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15, 17 ; Second Reading — 1 Corinthians 12:31—13:13; Gospel — Luke 4:21-30 From the Pastor ASCENSION CHURCH Parish Center: 808 S. Robert A. Cross Weekend Assistant Rev. Bob Hutmacher, OFM Deacon Couples Lendell & Tina Richardson Joe & Kathie Walsh It is always difficult for a parish when their school closes. You may have seen in the news a week or so ago that our neighboring parish, St. Edmund, will close their school in June. This was certainly a heartrending decision, and comes after vigorous attempts to boost enrollment and achieve fiscal stability, taking into account responsible stewardship principles for the parish. This will create turmoil in the lives of the school families and the staff, and sadness in the lives of alumni and parishioners. We have some room in our school, and will seek to welcome any children from St. Edmund who wish to transfer here. This is nothing new for us, as we welcomed students from St. Bernardine when the school there closed, and from St. Mary of Celle when theirs closed. In almost all cases of school closings, low enrollment is attributed to tuition rates that are beyond what people are willing and/or able to pay. Almost all Catholic schools are supported by robust fundraising programs and with significant financial support from their sponsoring parish. Mass-goers, whose Sunday donations subsidize the school and help keep tuition affordable, sometimes struggle to justify support for the school if the school children and their families are not seen in the pews on Sundays. It is a head-scratcher that is part of the dialogue between many Catholic schools and their sponsoring parishes. Of the 313 families that send their children to our school, 295 are Catholic. Of those, 212 are registered at Ascension; others are connected with other Catholic parishes. Our school families do support our parish financially, and many of our most active and dedicated parishioners have strong connections to the school. In some instances we have three generations of school alumni/students here in the parish. The profile for the parish given to me and other prospective pastors last year made it clear that maintaining a strong Catholic school is a high priority here at Ascension. That word, “maintain,” says a lot: it is incredible to be part of a school that is as large, vibrant and well-run as ours. The fact that so many of our parish families choose Ascension school, despite having access to excellent public schools in Oak Park, speaks volumes about the value they find in Catholic education. Let us keep the people of St. Edmund in our prayers even as we double our efforts to secure the future of our own education mission. May your week reflect the encounter with Christ we experienced at Mass today! Mental Health Counselor Bill Harrison - Claret Center 773-643-6259 Extension 24 J A N U A R Y 2 4 , 2 0 1 6 — P A G E 2 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 22:3-16 or 9:1-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Mk 16:15-18 Tuesday: 2 Tm 1:1-18 or 9:1-22; Ps 24:7-10; Mk 3:31-35 Wednesday: 2 Sm 7:4-17; Ps 89:4-5, 27-30; Mk 4:1-20 Thursday: 2 Sm 7:18-19, 24-29; Ps 132:1-5, 11-14; Mk 4:21-25 Friday: 2 Sm 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17; Ps 51:3-7, 10-11; Mk 4:26-34 Saturday: 2 Sm 12:1-7a, 10-17; Ps 51:12-17; Mk 4:35-41 Are Your Palm Branches Looking Old? Now is the time for us to start gathering last year’s palms that we received on Palm Sunday in anticipation for burning on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, February 9th. Beginning this weekend there will be a basket near the St. Joseph Shrine to collect them. We’ll even take those branches from two years ago! Ash Wednesday Schedule of Services February 10, 2016 Distribution of Ashes will take place within the context of the Mass or Prayer Service as indicated below: 8:15 am - Mass 10:00 am - Prayer Service with School Children 12:00 noon - Prayer Service 4:00 pm - Prayer Service with Religious Education Children 7:00 pm - Mass J A N U A R Y 2 4 , Each year at this time all parishes in the Archdiocese take part in the Annual Catholic Appeal. Because we ar e in the final year of receiving payments for pledges to the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, we have per mission to skip the In-Pew pledge program, where we listen to a recorded message from the Archbishop and then all fill out pledge cards in the pews. (We’ll have to do it again starting in 2017). Those who pledged last year should have received information for renewing their pledge in the mail from the Archdiocesan ACA office. Information brochures and pledge forms will be inserted in the bulletin next weekend, and then available in church for a few weeks. In addition, letters will go out at some point to all parishioners from whom the Archdiocese has not received a pledge. (This is all being handled by the Archdiocese, although the letter will bear my signature.) The Annual Catholic Appeal is a good cause, and anything that comes in above our parish goal (about $60.000) comes back to the parish for our use here. Fr. Hurlbert Minister of Care Visits The winter weather can make it difficult for getting to church on Sunday. If you can not get to church and would like a Minister of Care to bring Eucharist to you in your home, please call the parish office to make arrangements. Also, if a loved one is hospitalized, please contact the Pastoral Care Office in the hospital and tell them there is a patient who wishes to receive Eucharist. In case of serious illness, we will be happy to pray for your loved one at all the weekend Masses at Ascension; just call the Parish Center, 848-2703 and ask that their name be added to the weekend petition. 2 0 1 6 — P A G E 3 Meeting for Lectors this Wednesday, January 27th We invite and encourage all current Lectors to attend a meeting, facilitated by David Anderson, this Wednesday evening, January 27th from 7:00 – 8:15 pm in church. We will pray together and have some discussion in preparation for Lent, the Easter Triduum and the Easter Season. If you are unable to attend this meeting you will have another opportunity on Saturday, February 13th from 9:30 – 10:45 am. Thank you for serving in this important Liturgical Ministry at Ascension. AWC invites you to play BUNCO! This Wednesday, January 27th at 7:30 pm in the Pine Room. We provide the snacks, drinks and FUN! No previous experience required. All are WELCOME! Any questions please contact Annie Cheronis andreacheronis@yahoo.com. Overnight Shelter Help With five Fridays this month of January, we are in need of recruiting some extra volunteers to help with our Ascension-sponsored overnight shelter for the homeless. The dates in need are the evening of this Friday, January 29th and the early morning of Saturday, January 30th. Our shelter site is St. John's Lutheran School on Circle in Forest Park. Shifts begin with dinner at 6 pm. and continue through breakfast, ending around 8:30 am. If you may be able to help cover this commitment, please contact Kathie Walsh at: 708366-0884. House to Home Kits Are Back! In 2014 Ascension helped PADS – now Housing Forward – in their efforts to end homelessness, by providing household goods for clients moving into permanent supportive housing. Since then 63 people have moved out of homelessness thanks to their Open Door Housing program, and Housing Forward has added another supportive housing program, WIN (Wellness Initiative). These apartments will also have furniture, but will still need all the essentials, from pots and pans and trashcans to laundry soap and light bulbs. Each House to Home kit contains over 60 items that make living in an apartment possible, items that most of us take for granted in our daily lives. So stop at the back of church after Mass today and take a token for the items you would like to purchase. Saucepan? Toaster? Towels? Take as many tokens as you like. Purchase the item listed on the token from the store of your choice and drop it off the next few weekends. Drop off dates and other details can be found on the tokens. Rather donate money? Purchase a Target or Jewel gift card and drop it off. Please note that, to assure that everything in the apartment is in good working order, all items for House-to-Home kits (except TV’s and vacuum cleaners) should be new. Additionally, Housing Forward will receive a matching gift equal to the value of every kit donated by Ascension. If you have questions about the kits or the program, stop by the back of church, or email Amy Morton at AscensionHouseToHome@gmail.com. Thanks!! This is a night to delve into a deeper understanding of God’s forgiveness and our need for reconciliation. Please plan on attending at 7 pm in the Pine Room. Zero Waste program in the school lunchroom We are getting ready to launch our Zero Waste program in the school lunchroom to reduce our waste. This is a 4-step sorting process for recycling & composting. Besides improved recycling, we will be collecting all food scraps for composting to reduce organic waste. We are getting support from Seven Generations Ahead and have staff support. The Village of Oak Park has a commercial composter, and these food scraps become a rich soil amendment in four months, which is perfect for organic gardening and soil enrichment. It's a beautiful science and religion lesson, too. Laudato Si! J A N U A R Y 2 4 , 2 0 1 6 — P A G E 5 MISSION DAY is February 12, 2016 Ascension School holds a carnival fundraiser every year that is attended by Ascension students in all grades, from Pre-k to 8th grade. For information or to arrange this, visit our website, and click on “Giving” on the right hand top corner of the page. Those who prefer to arrange automatic bank drafts instead can find these forms in the pamphlet racks in the church vestibules or you can pick one up at the parish office. Those who set up automatic giving may, of course, still put envelopes (even if empty) or small cash donations in the basket, as a way of participating in the offertory, or to teach their children about stewardship. If your neighbor in the pew does not put anything in the basket, please assume a charitable posture: rather than presume stinginess, consider that s/he gives automatically or monthly. Christmas Collection to Date Collection Goal $101,276.81 January 17, 2016 Over (Under) Goal $130,000.00 ($28,723.19) Mass and the Flu Season It’s flu season again, time to remind ourselves to take a few simple measures to keep the flu and other illnesses from spreading. Good hygiene and good common sense should help keep our prayer together healthy as well as holy! The common-sense precautions we teach our children apply to all of us. When someone sneezes or coughs, that person should cover his or her mouth and nose, preferably with a tissue or the crook of the elbow. Frequent cleansing of the hands with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) or with an anti-bacterial solution is a key element in lowering the spread of any infection. Those who receive communion on the tongue should consider receiving in the hand. This is far more sanitary for you, for the minister, and for others receiving communion after you. We would also ask that no one dip their host into the consecrated wine. Anyone who is ill should stay home from church. The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday is suspended in case of illness. Those who come to church but have cold or flu symptoms should refrain from taking Holy Communion from the cup. They should also share the sign of peace with a simple nod of the head and the verbal exchange of Christ’s peace instead of shaking hands. Ministers of Communion who do not feel well should refrain from serving and find a substitute. With good care for ourselves and for each other, we can help keep the Body of Christ healthy this flu season.
