Vigésimo octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario St. Mary Parish, Waltham October 12, 2014 My brothers and sisters in Christ, Two Sundays ago, I attended a Cultural Gala put on by the “The Karolines” in the lower hall of the church. “The Karolines”, a musical group of young women and girls, sing at the 1:30 Mass and also perform throughout the year. They were fantastic. Not only was the performance great, but they also performed acts while they sang and danced. These performances explored issues and challenges in their lives and the lives of children throughout the world – illiteracy, sickness, a parent getting sick or dying. It was courageous and touching. It’s what culture is supposes to do – help us face life by bringing us together in strength and hope. Last Sunday, the adult Hispanic Chorus put on a lunch after the 11:30 Mass. It was a simple gesture that brought people together after the Mass. They raised money that they donated to the Church. When I asked one of them what the lunch was for she just said, “We want to do something for our Church.” At the same time that day, after the 10:00 and 11:30 Masses, some of the children of the After School Program set up a table giving out herbs and vegetables that they harvested from our garden. People took home some peppers, squash and tomatillos, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. It was great for the children who are just learning how to tend and watch things grow, to see the fruit of their work. They were really into it. Give thanks to the Lord for these gestures of gratitude that brought out the goodness of God in each one of us. - Father Michael TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE This weekend, members of the Knights of Columbus will be at the church doors after Mass accepting donations to benefit people with intellectual disabilities. Tootsie Rolls will be given out as a thank you to donors. THANK YOU TO RTN The staff at the local branch of RTN donated two Patriots tickets to St. Mary’s last week. The game was last Sunday night. The Youth Group raffled them off and collected a good amount of money in just a few days. This will allow them to pay for some of their events or help them go to the Pro-Life March in Washington. The winner of the Raffle happened to be Edwin Prado who has videotaped the Hispanic Mass for the local TV station for many years. Thanks to RTN for thinking of us. SEMI–ANNUAL APPEAL We encourage and thank every parishioner who is able to make a contribution to the Parish Semi-Annual Appeal. Anyone who did not make a contribution in last week’s second collection can drop it in the collection basket or mail it into the Rectory. Thank you for your continued stewardship of the parish. VINCENT de PAUL In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus say: “Many are invited, but few are chosen.” To give thanks for all that God has given to you, have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul here at St Mary’s? Please call us at the Rectory! “Called and chosen” as followers of Jesus, we stand with those struggling to embrace their dignity as children of God. For them we pray, God of mercy, hear our prayer. For those who love without measure, yet feel unloved by others, God of mercy, hear our prayer. For those who give to others, yet are deprived of basic needs, God of mercy, hear our prayer. This year’s theme is “Each of us is a MASTERPIECE of God’s creation.” During October we will feature articles related to this topic. SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER NEW TIME-7:30 AM Sunday Morning Prayer is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church. Please know that we would love to have you join us as we begin our day and week with thanks and praise to our Savior and Creator. The prayer is simple. It is easy to learn. You don’t have to bring anything. It takes about 20 minutes. It is for everybody. THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL COURSE Father Michael is leading a course/discussion on Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel”. The Holy Father wrote this reflection helping us to see the meaning of true joy and what a joy it is to be a Christian and a Catholic. The classes are from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the Wednesdays in October and take place in the St. Mary’s Religious Education building on the first floor. STUDY OF ST. MARK’S GOSPEL Fr. Tim Murphy will be leading a study of the Gospel of St. Mark on six Sunday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m. beginning on Sunday, October 26. We will be using A Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture: The Gospel of Mark by Mary Healy. All meetings will take place in the St. Mary’s Religious Education building on the first floor. The text costs $15 and will be a valuable reference to you in praying and reflecting on this gospel. Beginning on the first Sunday of Advent we will be reading St. Mark’s Gospel every Sunday at Mass. Please contact the rectory if you plan to attend and we will get you a copy of the text. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE: SEPTEMBER 24-NOVEMBER 2 From September 24 through November 2, you are invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You are also invited to stand and peacefully pray from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. each day in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood, 1055 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. Also, Friday night candlelight vigils outside Planned Parenthood begin at 7 p.m. every Friday night from September 26 - October 31. For more information visit 40daysforlife.com/boston. MARIAN CANDLE LIGHT ROSARY SERVICE Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted is holding a candle light Rosary service on Friday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. The prayer service will include recitation of the rosary, singing of hymns to Mary, and a procession to Our Lady’s statue. October is the month of the Rosary. Come and join us for prayer. ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES Many adults have not completed their initiation as Catholics. There are also many Christians baptized in another denomination who wish to inquire about Catholicism or enter into communion and become Catholics. (Protestants who become Catholics don’t convert. They are already Christians). We are beginning classes in October to help and accompany adults who wish to begin this process. If you or someone you know wants to join us in October, please call the parish office or speak to one of the priests. If you know an adult or child who was never baptized and wants to learn about Christ and/or become a Christian, please speak to one of the priests as this process is slightly different from Confirmation classes. THANK YOU FROM THE KAROLINES The Junior Karolines and the children of the Uganda Catholic Community thank the parishioners for their support at their cultural gala that took place on Sunday, September 28. Your presence and contributions blessed the children’s ministry. May God bless you. PLEASE DONATE FOOD FOR THOSE IN NEED Our St Vincent de Paul pantry is in need of donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items. Your donation will provide recipients with a bag of these items to supplement the food vouchers we also provide. Please leave your donations at the back of the church. WINTER COAT DRIVE Please bring your gently used, but clean, winter coats for women, men and children to church during October. Please leave them in the back of the church where members of the St Vincent de Paul Society will pick them up for distribution in November to those in need. ST.
