For the People of the Parish
Today’s Gospel reveals to us the beginning of Jesus’ journey
to Jerusalem. We will journey with Jesus for many Sundays
to come, and along the way he will teach us about the
demands of discipleship. His instructions may seem harsh
and unreasonable to our ears. His response to legitimate
requests to postpone the journey reminds us that there are
always justifiable excuses to defer the journey or put off the
responsibilities of discipleship. Other important matters
compete for our attention. Some of us must make heartwrenching choices, but there is urgency about Jesus’ mission to
bring forth God’s kingdom. His demand is that we proclaim
the Kingdom of God now. Is this our first priority, or do we
have other priorities?

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Saint Vincent’s Corner
In today’s Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent “messenger on ahead of Him.” To be the
messengers of God, we must know well what it is God wants to say and do through us, as he sends us out to
bring his love to others.
In the month of May, you were the “messenger of God” in bringing hope to the poor. Your gifts enabled
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to assist 110 families, provide 2800 pounds of food, $25,116 for utility
and miscellaneous bills and disaster assistance.
The Pro-Life Place
Pride Sets subtle snares. Whenever we imagine we are in control of life - our own or someone else's - we have
fallen prey to the ancient whisper in the Garden: "You shall be like gods." Mortality is the enduring reminder that
we become like God - not by our own power - but by the power of the cross.
The U.S. Bishops' are calling all Catholics to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty - through personal
and community prayer, penance, and sacrifice for increased protections of religious liberty and for rebuilding a
culture favorable to life and marriage. Make the pledge at www.usccb.org/fast

It might be easy to follow God’s command to love our neighbor as long as our neighbor thinks like we do. It might be
more difficult to love them if they think differently, are from
another culture, or are younger or older. God calls us to love
them because they are his children just as we are God’s
children. In what ways do you struggle to recognize God’s
presence in others? How do you enhance the dignity all
women and children?

FABULOUS FIFTIES
APPRECIATION DINNER & SOCK HOP!
This Sunday we begin with Jesus on the great
journey to Jerusalem. Having told the disciples
that commitment to him would mean the cross,
Jesus does not waver from his path. As Elijah
clothed Elisha with his prophetic mantle, Jesus
has clothed us in the mantle of discipleship. We
are invited to follow and to avoid excuses and
distractions. In the second reading, St. Paul
points to the heart of our discipleship – to love
one another in the freedom given to us by
Christ.
What might distract us from loving fully?
The event takes place on Tuesday, July 16
at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
For more information or to RSVP,
please contact 512-600-8172 or
